The Misery of Boredom

For a good month Aidan has been having issues with going to school. Even though it's warmer weather and he gets to play outside, Aidan seems to be resistant to staying there. He often clings to us and cries at drop-off. In the past he'd sometimes not want to stay in the morning but then not want to leave in the afternoons. These days he runs over to me and clings to my leg in the afternoon, begging to go home.

I'm not sure what the deal is. Last year at about this point in the school cycle we had behavioral issues. It became obvious pretty quickly that he and other children in the class were becoming bored and were picking at one another. This year it seems like some of the slightly older kids are picking at him and he's a little intimidated. Doesn't help that he's much smaller than the other boys. Let's just say big runs in their families. Small runs in ours. Enough said.

Classes change at the beginning of June and the oldest kids will be in a different class. I'm hoping this will fix the problem. It probably doesn't help that at home he's working on letters as a precursor to reading and at school they are still talking about shapes and colors. He's just not being challenged these days.
